In this listing - 4 new Canadian Ash axe handles made here in Nova Scotia. The handles are made locally in a small shop out of top quality Canadian White Ash that comes from nearby woodlots. When they are made they were sanded across the grain on a coarse grit belt sander.
I resand them along the grain going from 80 grit all the way down to 220 then burnish them with a worn out paper and finally oil with walnut oil. It is a lot of work but it gives the handles a wonderfully smooth velvety finish that is very nice in the hand. I have used one of these handles for 15 years without any issues. The handles have a sawn kerf to make wedging easier.
I recommend a softwood full wedge and a hardwood or metal small wedge at an angle across the end. The handles are 35 long. The eye is 2 3/8" X 7/8". I studied wood technology in school then spent a couple of years cutting wood for a logging outfit.
It is getting really hard to find a good Canadian Ash axe handles. That is why I decided to get some from a local handle shop and finish them myself. I try to select handles that have a good continuous grain line from end to end. Having the grain line go end to end in the handle is more important than the grain orientation.
It can run across, vertical or at an angle across the ends of the hande as long as the line goes from one end to the other. I always make sure I show lots of photos of the grain run so you can decide if these are the handles you want. The shop that makes the raw handle stock is shut down now and we do not know if or when it will open again so these handles are in very limited supply.
