The technique was taught to me by an old fellow who made axe handles for a living. The grain has to run just right to achieve a good result so I don't have many of these. The last treatment is a hand rubbed oil finish. These are very nice Canadian ash double bit handles and the grain run on them is very close to what it would look like on hand carved axe handles of the highest grade - very hard to find.
The handles are 31 3/4" long (80.5 c) - the eye end runs 3" from the handle end to the shoulder , about 2 3/4" down the side of the shoulder, 2 1/4" down the end of the eye and 5/8 across the end of the eye. Each has a sawn kerf so you can really wedge them out to fill an axe. We use a softwood wedge down the eye and a small hardwood wedge at an angle across the eye.
